McCartney Jacket! April 08 2015

I've been meaning to blog about the McCartney Jacket by Shwin Designs which I sewed up last week - time has been elusive!

Anyways, I bought this pattern a few weeks ago, but wasn't 100% sure what fabric I wanted to go with. I ended up at a fabric store in town and came across a couple of super cheap fabrics that I liked - a navy blue woven with an Asian print, and a light green Oriental Brocade. I'd never sewn with brocade before, and to be honest, if I can avoid it, I won't be sewing with it again in a hurry!!!

The pattern itself was SUPER easy to follow, and it took me a bit longer than it should have to sew up (maybe about 3.5 hours) because I kept coming across pieces that I'd somehow forgotten to cut out, and it took me a little while to figure out how the welt pockets worked (I'd never sewn them before)!

In the end, I love how it turned out! Even if I did accidentally sew the collar on upside down! The only adjustment I had to make was to lengthen the sleeves by 4". The sleeves on most long-sleeved tops/jackets are usually slightly too short for me, but 4" was hugely too short. I rolled with it though, and unless it was pointed out, I don't think you'd notice (the sleeve itself is in three pieces, and I had to add the extension after I'd sewn the other three pieces together and top-stitched it, making my sleeves consisting of four pieces). Another slight change I'd make next time is to shorten the waistband a bit, but that could have been because of the ribbing I used. Oh, and I found that a 22" zipper was PERFECT, rather than the 28" the pattern called for, but I made one of the smaller sizes, so you'd need a longer zip for a size bigger than I made.

I'll definitely be making this jacket again - it's super comfortable and easy to wear. I love that it can be dressed up or down, and mixing up the fabric choices means that it'll be a great staple!!

I just realised that I didn't get a picture of the front! Watch this space... Oh, and forgive the photos - they were taken by an almost-five year old :)
